Just left a voice mail message for Dr. Lawrence about Mother. Going home to make reservations now.

Her car backed out slowly, stopped, then proceeded forward. The watcher’s head bobbled a bit, and Lassiter saw the brake lights illuminate, accompanied by the flicker of white backup lights. The guy had shifted into gear. Lassiter adjusted his aim, traced his finger around the trigger again, but hesitated.

The same thought burned through his brain once more: What if this joker doesn’t report in?

The guy had obviously been assigned to watch Ellen, but it seemed no more at this point than a routine surveillance. Perhaps Fellows and company suspected her, perhaps they were following everyone. Shooting the guy would be akin to killing the messenger, and it would tip off Fellows that Lassiter had been with her, or at least watching over her. Let the guy report back what he saw: nothing more than her going into a restaurant for an hour or two. Unless the guy had gone in himself, or had a partner who went in... But then why would he have stayed in the car?

Ellen pulled out of the lot and turned right. The Tahoe followed, and Lassiter saw an immense puddle of water staining the street where the Tahoe had been idling. The guy hadn’t shut off the engine for quite a while. It was probably safe to assume he’d stayed in the car the whole time.

Lassiter flipped the safety on his Beretta and shoved it into his waistband as he ran back to the motorcycle. After starting it up, he pulled away from the curb and zipped over to the freeway. He knew Ellen would be taking I-19 north to her condo. Sure enough, up ahead, he saw both of them on the entrance ramp. Staying a good distance behind, he followed until Ellen dutifully signaled and made her exit. The driver of the Tahoe exited the freeway as well, and continued following her at a discreet distance.

Lassiter stayed close enough to keep the distinctive taillights in sight, but far enough away that he would be hard to notice. He sped up a little when Ellen made the right turn on the block where she lived. The Tahoe did likewise. The street was deserted, except for the usual empty cars parked along the curb. Lassiter shut off the motorcycle’s headlight and coasted around the corner, bumping up over the curb next to a tree in the parkway.

Down the block the gate for Ellen’s town house loft opened and she pulled inside. Apparently satisfied that she was going to her house, the driver of the Tahoe kept going. Lassiter sprinted across the street and pulled into dark shadows a few buildings away. He kept watching in silence until a few lights flickered on inside Ellen’s loft. The street remained devoid of traffic. A few minutes later his cell phone vibrated once more with another text.
